This past week I headed out to Assateague to get some coastal photographs to add to my mountains. In a way this was coming full circle for me. I started taking photographs when I was 19 but life got in the way and I put away my camera for a long time. In 1999 I went with some friends to Assateague for a girl’s weekend away. That’s when the photography bug hit again and I came home and said “I need a new camera, I want to start taking photographs again”. It was a long journey from there to Florida to art festivals but it was the beginning.
I could have picked a better week to go. It was rainy and overcast and the weather slowly got worse. My first stop was Dismal Swamp. It was too wet and damp to take the cameras out hiking so I stuck to the Railroad Ditch road. I got a couple of photographs at Lake Drummond but I think there are better times of year to go to Dismal Swamp and so I scraped my plan of spending a day there and headed to Assateague. I never did get a sunrise or sunset image although I dutifully showed up for both hoping for something besides grey skies.
This coming weekend I am headed for the Virginia Fall Foliage Festival in Waynesboro, Virginia. The sun is supposed to come out today and it looks like it is going to be a nice weekend. If you have been cooped up in the house during this long rain come by and see me. I’ll be in booth 29.
